On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 became law. One of the provisions allows stats to extend pregnancy-related Medicaid coverage from 60 days postpartum to a full year postpartum. This is incredibly important for new mothers experiencing MMH conditions: the peak incidence of postpartum depression is 3-6 months postpartum and the peak incidence of suicide is 6-9 months postpartum. Medicaid covers almost 50% of births in the United States, including 66% of births to Black Women.
