270+ Organizations Co-Sign Letter Urging Congress to Protect Maternal Health Programs

On May 14, 2025, Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA) submitted a letter to Congressional leaders advocating for continued funding of programs that focus on maternal and infant mortality, with a specific focus on maternal mortality review committees (MMRCs).

This initiative, which garnered over 270 organizational co-signers, is in response to the proposed cuts to offices, programs, and staff that would negatively impact maternal health as outlined in the proposed Federal Budget for Fiscal Year 2026 as put forth by the President’s Office of Management and Budget and in the press release from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Together, these changes have the potential to undo years of bipartisan progress in maternal and infant health and threaten to rollback the research that improves our understanding of the causes and circumstances behind our nation’s high maternal mortality rate.

This letter has two objectives: (1) Educate leaders in Congress about the programs and offices at risk and the potential negative impact on infant and maternal mortality; and (2) Request that Congress prioritize long-term investment in the health and wellbeing of our nation’s families by funding evidence-based programs and public health initiatives that support mothers and infants.
