Funding Opportunities in Maternal Mental Health
Several funding opportunities are available to support the mental health and well-being of our nation’s mothers through research, pilot projects, and programs.
NOTE: Many of these funding opportunities are due in July.
Translational Research in Maternal and Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is providing this funding opportunity to support translational and clinical research to (1) advance precision medicine in pregnant women, lactating women, and children; (2) enhance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of drug action; and (3) discover and develop novel therapeutics or enhance the usage of existing drugs or drug repurposing for safer and more effective medications in pregnant and lactating women, neonates, and children.
The overall goal is to improve safe and effective precision therapeutics for pregnant and lactating women, fetuses, neonates, and children, including those with disabilities.
Who Can Apply: Nonprofit organizations, government agencies, for-profit businesses, and educational institutions.

Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP)
The Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) supports research across the full range of science and medicine with an underlying goal of enhancing the health, care, and well-being of military service members, Veterans, retirees, and their family members.
PRMRP supports research that has the potential to profoundly impact the development and implementation of medical devices, drugs, and clinical guidance that will enhance the precision and efficacy of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment across a wide range of disciplines, benefiting service members and civilians alike.
Maternal mental health was added as a priority research area within the PRMRP in 2023. Since then, four awards have been administered to maternal mental health research projects, totaling $19.36 million.

State Pilot Program for Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is providing this funding opportunity to support state-level pilot initiatives designed to coordinate, strengthen, and scale evidence-based substance use disorder (SUD) and maternal mental health treatments for pregnant and postpartum women.
The program emphasizes integrated family-based care, universal screenings, comprehensive clinical treatment, workforce education, and recovery wrap-around support services to combat severe maternal morbidity and infant mortality in communities disproportionately impacted by the addiction crisis.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility is strictly limited by statute to Single State Agencies (SSAs) responsible for state substance use and administration programs.

Services Program for Residential Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is providing this funding opportunity to provide comprehensive services for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders across the continuum of residential settings that support treatment and sustain recovery.
Who Can Apply: Domestic public and private nonprofit entities, including faith-based organizations.

Screening and Treatment for Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is providing this funding opportunity to support states and Native American Tribal organizations to improve maternal mental health and substance use disorder outcomes for pregnant and postpartum women by providing obstetric, primary care, and other maternal health providers with timely access to teleconsultation, training, and care coordination including resources and referrals.

Center for Transition to Parenthood (CTtP)
The Center for Transition to Parenthood (CTtP) is a research-to-practice initiative and virtual, information-sharing hub helping perinatal clinicians provide enhanced, whole-person, 2Gen care.
With innovative contributions to scientific knowledge and cross-sector partnerships, CTtP strives to make a lasting positive impact on families' well-being from the start. TTtP will award two (2) $50,000 awards for initiatives advancing science or intervention oriented to the public health mission of transforming the perinatal care ecosystem.
Proposals will be accepted for:
Research projects in areas such as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), prenatal programming, and perinatal mental health services
Community-based initiatives designed to improve perinatal care, focusing on equity, access, and innovation

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
PCORI is an independent, non-profit organization in the U.S. that funds clinical research designed to help patients, caregivers, and clinicians make better informed healthcare decisions. PCORI funds programs that focus on clinical effective research (CER), which compares two or more medical treatments, devices, or healthcare strategies to determine which works best for specific patients in real-world settings.
PCORI has several funding opportunities opening on August 4.
1: Research Awards
May include one or more of the following: CER Broad Pragmatic Studies, CER PLACER, CER Topically Focused, Advancing the Science of Engagement in Research, or Improving Methods for Conducting Patient-Centered CER.
