Military Mothers Experience Maternal Mental Health Conditions Almost 3 Times More than Civilians. MMHLA Takes Steps to Solve this Issue.

A report from the Government Accountability Office in May 2022 indicated that military mothers (active duty, dependents, reservists, and retirees) experience perinatal mental health conditions at 2-3 times the rate of their civilian counterparts.

To better understand this issue, the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA) authored a letter to the members of the Armed Services Committees requesting additional information including:

  • A report on the Military Health System activities to prevent, intervene, and treat perinatal mental health conditions of members of the armed forces and their dependents, and

  • A study by the Comptroller General on the impact of perinatal mental health conditions of members of the armed forces and their dependents on military readiness and retention.

This critical information will help MMHLA identify additional policy opportunities to ensure our nation’s military families receive the support and healthcare they need and deserve.

See below for the 94 organizations that signed this letter alongside MMHLA. You can read the full letter here.
