MMHLA and 130 Orgs Urge the Senate to Match Higher House Funding Levels for Maternal Mental Health State Grants
The year-long process to secure federal funds for maternal mental health programs continues.
In September, we celebrated that the Senate and the House both included funding for maternal mental health programs that are part of MMHLA’s 2025 Advocacy Agenda:
National Maternal Mental Health Hotline: Provides 24/7, free, confidential call or text support to mothers and others impacted by maternal mental health conditions (available in English and Spanish and 60+ other languages via translation);
Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder State Grants (MMH-SUD State Grants): Provides education, consultation, and resources to healthcare providers who support mothers—expanding access to care, especially in areas where there are not enough mental health providers to meet the demand.
We are sincerely grateful that both the House and Senate have appropriated funding for these critical programs. However, we noted that the House included more funding ($13.5 million) for the MMH-SUD State Grants than the Senate ($12 million).
In our continued advocacy efforts, we have sent a letter to Congressional leaders, which has been endorsed by 130 organizations, to encourage the Senate to match the higher, House-led funding level, emphasizing that additional funding will enable the MMH-SUD program to expand to at least two additional states or Tribes.
On October 22, 2025, we submitted the letter to Senate leadership, and now we await the Senate’s response.
