Objectives
This event will bring together experts in maternal mental health alongside experts in the military healthcare system to:
✓ Learn about the latest research on the impact of maternal mental health on military mothers.
✓ Better understand the unique needs of military mothers experiencing maternal mental health conditions.
✓ Identify opportunities to share information about existing maternal mental health resources.
✓ Discuss ways to increase the number of mental health providers who have expertise in maternal mental health and serve military communities.
✓ Share information about programs that are making a difference in the lives of military mothers.

Adrienne Griffen, MPP
Executive Director, Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA); Navy Veteran

Adrienne is an advocate and subject-matter expert in maternal mental health.
Prior to joining MMHLA, Adrienne founded Postpartum Support Virginia and served as executive director for 10 years, establishing a statewide network of peer-led support groups, creating educational programs for mental health providers and maternal-child healthcare professionals, and helping pass legislation requiring information about postpartum depression and anxiety be provided to new mothers.
Adrienne graduated from the United States Naval Academy and has a master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Karen L. Weis, PhD, RNC-OB, FAAN is a Professor and Dean of the University of Kansas School of Nursing (Salina campus) and the Christine A. Hartley Rural Nursing Endowed Chair.
She is a 29-year Veteran of the United States Air Force. She completed five military deployments, one of which was as Director of the Joint Combat Casualty Research Team. She was the consultant to the Surgeon General for Nursing Research.
Her research is focused on perinatal mental health, birth outcomes and the associated maternal-fetal physiologic responses. Her work has led to the development of the Mentors Offering Maternal Support (M-O-M-S) Intervention.
She has been funded by TriService Nursing Research, DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, and the Uniformed Services University. In addition to articles and book chapters, she co-authored the text Psychosocial Adaptation to Pregnancy.

Lieutenant Colonel Laura Manzo, PhD
Deputy Chief, Center for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry at Womack Army Medical Center

Lieutenant Colonel Laura Manzo has served in the Army Nurse Corps for 17 years and is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of the Center for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry (CNSCI).
She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Hawaii Pacific University in 2009, her Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Administration from University of Phoenix in 2012, and her PhD in Nursing from Yale University in 2025.
Lieutenant Colonel Manzo’s program of research focuses on maternal mental health and cardiomyopathies among servicewomen and dependent spouses.
